Apple’s 2022 product lineup will reportedly include new Mac Pros, a VR headset, redesigned MacBook Air, and more
2021 was an eventful year for Apple, with the company releasing many category-defining products. That’s exactly why 2019 looks to be the last year before Apple finally updates its desktop Mac Pro line with a new model, which means a lot of speculation is sure to run rampant in the coming months.
According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is going to launch two products in its 2020 product lineup — a refreshed Mac Pro and a VR headset.
The news was made in the latest KGI survey, which provides insights into Apple’s product plans. And while Kuo’s survey has already been proven accurate in the past, this is the first time he has predicted a refresh for Mac Pro — and not just any refresh, but an upgrade of the 2018 Mac Pro, which is currently the least powerful Mac Pro lineup.
Here’s what Kuo said about the Mac Pro refresh and its prospects.
For 2020, Apple will launch new desktop models with refreshed design. The new models are expected to be introduced in the fall of 2020, likely ahead of the holiday season.
As far as the Mac Pro lineup goes, Kuo believes that Apple will introduce a new design in 2020, but it’s also possible that Apple could use a small design refresh for Mac Pro in 2019.
He added that Apple will likely also update its Mac mini to a new design, but this won’t happen before fall 2020. The Mac mini was last updated with a redesign in 2018, so if Kuo’s analysis is correct, the product is going to be refreshed for at least two years.
Kuo also believes that Apple’s VR efforts will be pushed forward with the introduction of new products in 2020 and 2021.
At an event in August 2019, Apple released the iPhone 11 series, as well as a couple of new Apple Watches. The new Watches included a revamped design and new health tracking features. Apple is already working on a headset that is said to be powered by Magic Leap.
In the past, Apple has been criticized for its lack of VR efforts, but Kuo believes this is the year when Apple is going to make its presence felt in the market. He said that in 2020 and 2021, Apple will release not only new VR products but a new high-end headset, too.
Kuo said that the new headset will be “truly unique” compared to others in the market, though it won’t be a competitor to the Rift or Vive. Kuo believes it will feature an excellent field of view, and will include motion tracking, as well as “other features never seen before.”
While he doesn’t specify the name of the new headset, Kuo is reportedly referring to it as the Magic Leap One. The name doesn’t exactly suggest Apple.
It will be a while before we find out more details about Apple’s new headset. According to Kuo, the new headset won’t be released until at least late 2020. He also believes that Apple will unveil new Macs in the same time, so we could find out more details about its headset in the future.
Kuo is an analyst known for producing accurate rumors. His surveys have proven to be accurate at the time of release and even in the case of delays. In the last one, he accurately predicted the release dates of the iPhone XR and iPhone 11 series.
His 2020 predictions for Apple are a mix of things expected and unexpected. For example, he believes that the 2020 MacBook Air will adopt a new design, but that it won’t be a major redesign. Apple is currently using the latest chips to make the MacBook Air, which is not only a cost-cutting measure but a sign that the MacBook Air is likely to get a design refresh in 2020.
Kuo also thinks that Apple will release a new MacBook Pro next year, and that it will support USB-C, Thunderbolt 3 and Intel’s Xe graphics. He also believes that Apple will release new Mac Pros in 2020, though it’s unclear what he means. It could be that Kuo is referring to the latest Mac Pro models, which are quite old.
However, his prediction about new MacBook Air seems to be quite accurate, since it follows previous reports that the company is currently in the process of making a redesign. On the other hand, it’s strange that Kuo says Apple will release new Mac Pros, when it’s not yet clear what he means. It’s also strange that he is the first analyst to say that Apple will launch the new Mac Pro in 2020, since the last version was released almost two years ago
Kuo’s comments about Mac mini were also interesting. It suggests that Apple is looking to upgrade it, and the only way to do so is to do it via a redesign. This means that Apple will have to redesign it this year, and it seems as though this is what Apple is planning to do.
However, at this stage, it’s still too early to be sure. It could be that the Mac mini will also be upgraded to the latest chips. But since the iMac, which is the company’s most important desktop product, was updated with a new processor this year, it seems like the Mac mini might receive the same treatment.
Kuo’s 2020 predictions for Apple are quite interesting, but it’s yet to be seen if he will be able to make them come true. The company could potentially announce a new Mac Pro, new MacBook Air, and a new Mac mini this year. However, nothing is set in stone and it’s still too early to get excited.
